These images explore a few of the places that trigger memories in me – and perhaps in you. These may be places that suggest archetypes we share or that suggest communal acts of remembrance, or of the uncanny and uncertain, the veiled and mysterious, the oceanic interconnectedness of life. Examples are the secret gardens of our childhood, offerings to Charon, the mythic ferryman to the afterlife, the foggy uncertainties of the path of life we can sense but not see, the presence of the natural world, the yearning for a kind of luminous clarity – Elysium, the isle of the blessed. In practice each of us carries an almost unlimited number of such moments and archetypes. Some we hold in common, some are ours alone. These are some of mine.
This is the second iteration of my contribution to a joint exhibition with other members of The Long Exposure collective inspired by Philip Larkin's poem, “Why Did I Dream of You Last Night?”. Our exhibition was shown at the Four Corners Gallery in Bethnal Green, London, in November 2022; at Walford Mill in Wimborne, Dorset, in February 2023; and at Centrespace Studios and Gallery in Bristol in March 2023.
